Weight Loss Myths

Weight Loss Myths

If you want to start a diet, fist you must know that nutrition, exercise and weight loss are surrounded by a large number of myths. We can’t list them all, but here are the most common ones.

  1. Not exercising gets you fat.

The body fat doesn’t come as a result of lack of exercise. It is gained when your blood sugar level is very high and outruns what you are using. Basically this means that you take in too many calories. Therefore, daily exercise helps you burn these calories that are in excess, not to mention the many other health benefits that come as a result. You will not lose weight just by working out if you end up taking in too many calories.

So this is the most important thing to remember if you want to lose weight: taking in more calories than you can burn means gaining weight, your body storing them as fat. Always remember that you need to work out and you can even have a good free workout at home or in the park.

2. The metabolism starts to slow down after turning 30.

Just another common myth. But actually, it had been shown by the many research studies that this metabolism slow down with age comes as a cause of muscle tissue loss, this loss being related to the lack of physical exercise. So if you want to avoid this metabolism slow down as you get older, don’t forget to include in your exercise program forms of weight bearing exercise, for example gym work.

  1. All Carbs are bad for you.

All over the world food like pasta and bread is being avoid by people who believe these foods are fattening because they are sources of carbohydrates. We are also faced with low carb diets. But any kind of food or drink can be fattening if you make abuse and eat more than you need; even fruit or vegetables, like lettuce, can be deposited as body fat, if the sugar level in your blood exceeds the needs of your body. You can eat everything as long as you eat what is right.

  1. Eating after 7pm makes you fat

This is false. You will get fat no matter what time you eat, as long as you don’t really need these extra calories. But if your body needs them, you can eat after 7pm without to worry about your weight. The secret is to eat in the adequate moments of the day, when you burn more calories than usually.

  1. Strength training makes you bulky

You won’t believe how many women worry about this. But intensive strength training can’t determine your muscle size; hormone production and genetics do.

Actually, for women, building muscles has its benefits: muscles help you burn calories. Therefore more calories are burned if you have more muscle; but burning the fat faster and easier is not the only advantage; it also makes it harder to gain that fat back.

These are only five common weight loss myths. We will discuss the other ones in future articles. Until then, keep these in mind, stay healthy and keep on exercising. Stay fit and learn how to lose weight the right way!

Soda Water For Weight Loss Demystified

Thursday, December 25th, 2008

Soda water is a alternative to boring plain water when losing weight. Because obese people often hate plain water, it does not taste good enough when life circulate around drinking and eating. Carbonated soda water taste great and when tired of plain water, one can add Aromhuset flavors that hold no calories sugars or carbohydrates.

Soda Water is carbonate water, sometimes referred to as , and is plain ole’ water which carbon dioxide (CO2) gas has been added. In most “soft drinks” and “pop” It is the chief ingredient. Carbonation produces carbonic acid, which produces soda pop.

By using a seltzer bottle filled with water and then “charged” with carbon dioxide, soda water (club soda) was produced in the past in the home. Club soda is often just the same as plain carbonated water; however, in some cases, it can have a small amount of table salts and sodium trace minerals. Additives like these could make the taste of home made soda water slightly salty. The process also occurs naturally in some areas and produce carbonate mineral water.

Sparkling mineral water sometimes causes a little dental decay. Sparkling water’s potential affects on dental problems are somewhat greater than with non-sparkling water, but the difference is not drastic. Sugary soft drinks cause tooth decay at a much higher rate than sparkling water. The rate is so low it suggests that carbonation may not be a factor in causing dental decay.

Water that comes from the ground - usually from artesian wells - and filtered among layers of minerals containing some form of carbonates may absorb the carbon dioxide gas released by the carbonates. Natural sparkling water is the result. If the water also picks up enough different minerals to become flavored, it becomes sparkling mineral water.

Basically, water + carbon dioxide = soda water. You are probably familiar with sparkling mineral water — a naturally-occuring result of carbonation. A jeweler, in 1794, made a device to produce an artificial carbonated mineral water.

In a taste test of several carbonated drinks, it was determined that Perrier, a sparkling natural mineral water, kept its fizz the longest.

Consumers feeling seltzer to be a bit harsh will find club soda to have a more gentle fizz. In one part of the taste test, club soda seemed to be milder and a little sweeter tasting than standard carbonated water.

Having zero calories, club soda, sparkling mineral water, seltzer, and carbonated water are a dieter’s choice over soda pop and tonic water.

Another carbonated drink, tonic water, is produced by mixing water, sugar, carbon dioxide and quinine. Quinine was originally added to tonic water to help cure or prevent malaria. Today it is commonly mixed with gin and lemon or lime for an alcoholic drink.

Now you have a better understanding of soda water.

How to Use the Glycemic Index to Lose Weight

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

The glycemic index, or GI, can be helpful to those looking to lose weight. It ranks carbohydrates according to their effect on glucose levels in the blood.

Carbohydrates that break down quickly during digestion have a high GI rating. This is important because foods with a high GI rating raise blood sugar levels and throws your metabolism off kilter. The result is weight gain. Foods with a low GI rating keep a person’s blood sugar at an even level, making it easier to lose weight. Eating foods with a low GI can also lower your risk of developing diabetes, cancer, and heart disease.

Studies have shown that rats that ate a diet full of foods with a high GI diet were 71% fatter and had 8% less lean body mass rats that ate foods with low GI numbers. (Pawlak, 2004)

So, how do you know which foods have a low GI without consulting a chart every time you eat? Use these easy tips for eating foods with a low GI:
·        First, avoid processed foods.
·        Eat breads that are high in fiber.
·        Choose muffins, bagels, and rolls that contain oats, whole wheat, seeds, and nuts.
·        Eat fresh fruits and vegetables.
·        Stay away from foods with empty calories like soda, candy, and chips.
·        Eat more legumes.
·        Avoid sugary cereals.

A good rule of thumb is to avoid all foods that have a high level of sugar. Reading food labels can help with this a lot and will take out most of the guesswork. Also, try to use sugar substitutes in your cooking. Here is an example of a low GI recipe to get you started.

Yogurt Blue Berry Muffins

Ingredients:

·        1/3 cups brown sugar substitute
·        1/3 cup flax seed
·        2 1/2 cups rolled oat
·        1 tsp baking soda
·        3 cups whole wheat flour
·        1/4 tsp salt
·        3 eggs
·        2 cups plain yogurt
·        3/4 cup canola oil
·        2 cups frozen blueberries (thawed)

Directions

First, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, combine the wheat flour, oats, salt and baking soda and mix well.
In another, smaller, bowl, combine the sugar, yogurt, oil, and eggs. Beat the mixture until it is smooth and then add the blue berries.
Gently mix the wet and dry ingredients together. Bake for around 20 minutes in a greased muffin tin.

Using the glycemic index you can start losing weight right away. Also, try reading ebooks, such as Turbulence Training review, to help you lose more weight.

Vitamins and food for weight loss.?

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

I'm seventeen, I'm 5foot 5inches, and i weigh 128lbs.
I know I'm not obese or fat, but i could loose some weight, in my stomach and thighs.

Does anyone know any vitamins i could take or weight loss bars that are healthy that i can use?

You really aren't big enough to take any fat loss supplements. You weigh 128 and many would consider you tiny no offense. I will of course tell you that Atro-phex is a product by BSN. It should help you lose some weight and gives you a ton of energy. Besides that, do some cardio and lift weights. Take Vitamin C and glutamine to help recovery and help you keep muscle while you lose your fat. GOOD LUCK

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

Jenny Craig or Nutri-System? Or another option that perhaps I don't know about? I am more interested in one that I can do by online counseling and mailed food programs as neither are located in my smallish town.

How do I identify what I'm doing wrong that sabotages my weight loss goal?

Friday, December 19th, 2008

Any tips on how to identify it? I dont drink sodas or eat fast food, yet I should still lose some weight. How do I identify what Im doing wrong all the time?

Wow…this is a difficult question to answer because it's sort of general and vague…and every person is different when it comes to weight and weight loss.

I have to preface my answer by stating that I'm not an expert at weight loss, but I know what's worked for me.

Sometimes…if you're on a particular diet that's working for you…you can lose a lot of weight…and then "plateau" at a point where you can't lose anymore. This happens a lot and usually means that you have to change something up in your diet.

Also, it's important to remember that it's not always what you AREN'T eating…but also what you ARE eating…and HOW you're eating it.

For instance…it's so important to eat healthy food regularly. By regularly…I mean like 5-6 times a day. Small meals. And it helps to keep carb intake limited to the mornings to early afternoon (around 3:00). I try to stay away from carbs after 2 or 3 in the afternoon because the earlier I eat carbs…the more likely the carbs will be used for what they are intended to be used for - ENERGY. Stick to proteins later in the day (after 2 or 3) and try not to eat anything after 6:00 or 7:00.

Also…if you're going to eat carbs…stick to whole grains…wheat.

Drink lots and lots of water…and try to incorporate SOME type of activity on a daily basis (whether it's walking, dancing, working out, whatever…)

In general…if you burn more calories than you ingest…you are likely to lose weight.

I hope that my answer helps in some way. And good luck with your accomplishing your goal…whatever it may be!
