I have a year and a half old yellow Lab that has the same problems, he gets very tubby very easy. But he is fine getting one cup of food in the a.m and one cup at night. Cut down on your dogs food, Labs have a tendency to get fat. I also switched to Royal Canin Labrador Retriever 30, it is especially designed to address the problems Labs face. The protein level is alot higher than the fat content in order to cut the weight and promote leaner muscle. It also has other minerals and vitiams to help with weight and coat. My dogs love their food and do the best on it. Keep up on the exercise and cut the food he should drop the weight.
References :
We feed our dogs Innova and when our Doxie was putting on a little weight, our vet told us that we didn't need to find a diet food (not for this brand at least), but he consulted us as to what portionings we should adjust the feedings to.
References :
Ok, first - stop feeding him the can food! Next, I would go and purchase Eukanuba Restricted Calorie! Following the feeding guide exactly. There is a feeding guide on the side of the bag that will give you an amount as a daily feeding - split that feeding in half - offering 1/2 of it in the morning and 1/2 of it in the afternoon and do not give any additional feed of any kind, stick with the exercise and your dog should start to trim down quite nicely! Good Luck
References :
Experienced Cocker Spaniel owner/breeder and vet assistant - http://www.roberson-cocker-spaniels.com

I would put him on dry food only. Canned food encourages dogs to eat more than they otherwise would.

I wouldn't waste money on a weight loss dog food. I'd just feed him less. The amounts listed on the food bags are only guidelines. Every dog's metabolism is different and some require less food to maintain the same weight as another equally active dog. One good way to do this is to gradually decrease the food you give him in one feeding until it is eliminated. Once a day feeding is plenty for an adult dog.
References :
Talk to your vet there might be a thyroid problem. Also the food you feed him now look on the back of the bag it normally tells the amounts to feed and how many times a day.My 5 yr old male Dane eats about 2to4 cups more than what the bag says but he is at the right weight. Were my puppy gets the normal amount and he won't eat half of it. It depends on the food and the dog. Are you still feeding puppy food have you tried high energy foods. On top of what you feed him how many treats does he get these are all things to look at.If you really walk 1 to 3 miles a day that is great do you make him run at all like playing fetch. I try to do that until my dogs get tired and wont bring back the ball. But really talk to your vet.
References :
He should probably be eating about 2 cups a day of dry food, and I do prefer a diet formula like Nutro Natural Choice Lite. The exercise is great! The feeding recommendations on most dog food bags are just WAY too high. If he thinks you're starving him when you reduce his dry food, you can add green beans or carrots to help him feel fuller. (Not canned, they have too much sodium).

I think you're doing a fantastic job by giving him lots of exercise and researching how to help him lose weight. Good luck!
References :
I have a 6 year old golden retriever, with a bad hips. She is unable to get a lot of exercise without being in pain. I feed her sensible choice, reduced calorie - lamb & rice. She maintains her weight very well. This is necessary so as not to put on to much weight, causing a strain on her hips. Petco, petsmart sells this brand.
References :
Have your dog evaluated by a vet. There are many reasons why your pet might be overweight. He or she can give you some advice about your dog's health, and how to safely reduce their weight.
